Body Pieces

Freudian self-portrait, condensed sizes variable

(unglazed handbuilt earthenware, 88x96x73cm variable)

Freud famously described all containers, cupboards, boxes, pots- enclosed or enclosing spaces- as feminine, in contra-distinction to long and narrow-i.e. phallic shapes, which are masculine.

With my tongue in my cheek, I have taken this definition of women to heart and produced a series of clay boxes of varying size, shape, texture and colour, each one representing a different aspect of my appearance and personality. The boxes can be condensed by placing smaller ones inside bigger ones.
