One Man’s Journey

video art: 39 seconds

This is my father’s story. He escaped Germany on the Kindertransport to England as a penniless teenager early in 1939.

His mother expired at Rivesaltes internment camp in France in May 1941and his father was gassed at Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland in August 1942.

Slowly and painfully my father built a new life in England- with a profession and family. Taking early retirement, he moved to Israel, living in Jerusalem, where we see him with some of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in front of the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament).

This work encapsulates his fractured journey and layered identity, so characteristic of the histories of a fast-disappearing group within the Jewish people.
